PROJECT MANAGEMENT BREAKTHROUGH
 
The Metro Stonerich Corporation Top Management sponsored a six (6) day training program, for the Project Managers, Department Heads, Cost Engineers, Office Engineers and selected Staff. It was every Saturday from June 20, 2009 up to July 25, 2009 at MSC Head Office Conference Room and it was PLDT Training Center with the theme: “PROJECT MANAGEMENT TIPS & TRICKS” spearheaded by Arch. Jose Erwin B. Sebastian, PMP, an expert, competent and one of the few and counted practitioners here in the country.

What is project management? A question asked during the opening of the seminar that took us aback and created a deep silence among the trainees. Handling a project is a task which mostly we took as simply supervising, monitoring and delivering what is planned and scheduled overseeing on the details and processes which forms the basic and integral part of the real word “Project Management”.

We were all amazed and astonished to find out the different ideas and factors that must be considered in delivering a very successful and profitable project with regards to quality, time and cost implication of every scope and activities. As our mentor says, “Mind Ware” is an important aspect to be able to understand, interpret and put into action what we learned in the module into an effective tool, aiding us in a proper and precise project management.

Project management is accomplished through the use of processes such as: Initiating, Planning, Executing, Controlling, and Closing. These processes describe, organize and complete the work of the project which is also composed of the knowledge areas such as project integration, scope management, time management, cost management, quality management, procurement management, risk management, human resource management and communications management.

The interfaces between each process are determined to ascertain and deliver appropriate inputs with the aid of tools and techniques that will result to an output. The seminar has enabled us to simplify the preparation of strenuous detailed construction work schedule bringing about different features that will enhance and deliver results in the shortest possible time and being able to adjust durations, resources and materials input to achieve the required budget.

One of the highlights of the training is the game of dice conducted at the last day of our training, which reflects the different scenarios that an ordinary waiting shed project might encounter with unexpected events that contributes to the delay of a certain project due to quality deficiency, typhoons, unskilled workers and other risks. The lessons learned from this game of luck was implanted in our hearts that every activity and scope must be implemented properly and accordingly because the bottomline as emphasized by our trainor is to deliver what is required in order to maintain balance in the “Pyramid” – Cost, Time and Quality that will produce good results and achieve the clients’ satisfaction. The training ended with this game that was enjoyed and cherished by everybody. Group 4 with Engr. Thomas Vargas Jr. as the acting Project Manager accompanied by lucky members won the game much to the objection and desperate claims of Group 5.
We would like to extend our gratitude to the Top Management who made this event a realitythat imparted a great deal of knowledge and skills to all of us. Also, we extend our appreciations to our Trainor, Arch. Jojo Sebastian who has shared every technical and viable information, the tips and tricks and his encompassing patience for us to be able to grasp the importance and significance of real “Project Management”.
